Ash Wednesday, Lent, and Longing for Easter Resurrection

Dear Redeemer Family,

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the season called Lent in the Church Calendar. Just as we celebrate the season of Advent leading up to Christ’s birth at Christmas, so too, for centuries Christians have remembered the time leading up to Christ’s death and glorious resurrection at Easter. The season of Lent helps us focus our minds on our need for Jesus to die for us and causes us to hunger and hope for Easter. It is a time to focus on repentance – seeing our sin and turning from it, while simultaneously turning to our gracious Savior. Lent is a hopeful season which prepares us to joyfully join the feast at the resurrection!

Redeemer does not yet hold our own Ash Wednesday service. But I encourage you to take time to reflect on the significance of the day.

Attached is a devotional guide for the whole church year published by The Village Church. It has a section on Lent beginning on p. 70 which you may find a useful devotional guide during this season.

You may also find it here:

It begins:

“The word “Lent” can invoke a number of thoughts, questions and feelings, depending on your background with the Church. If you grew up in an evangelical church, you probably think of it as some strange Catholic tradition, where folks put ashes on their foreheads and give up different kinds of foods every year. If you grew up in a liturgical tradition, you may have had a good experience or, perhaps, you file it away in the junk drawer of legalism given some bad experiences. Whatever the case, Lent doesn’t have to be seen as either rote or mystifying. Like the rest of the seasons, it can be seen rightly and faithfully when understood through the lens of Jesus—the one true story of the Bible.”
